Our Fairwater, WI location is looking for a skilled Ammonia Refrigeration Operator/Refrigeration Technician!

Under the guidance of the Operations Manager and Refrigeration Technician(s), the Ammonia Refrigeration Operator plans and performs all of the operational duties related to the ammonia refrigeration systems and support equipment. The Ammonia Refrigeration Operator will be responsible for the efficient operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of all refrigeration components and support equipment.  The Ammonia Refrigeration Operator will also be expected to be an active member of the in house Haz-Mat Team. The below list is not all-encompassing and may be further developed to include additional tasks and responsibilities as the Refrigeration Operator progresses:

  • Work under the direction of the Operations Manager and Refrigeration Technician(s) to operate and maintain the three ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for the refrigeration systems to safely operate and maintain the refrigeration components and support process equipment
  • Work effectively with production staff to start, operate, and shut-down the ammonia refrigeration systems based on production requirements
  • Isolate, pump-out, disassemble, repair, and reassemble the refrigeration system components and support equipment following all safety procedures
  • Assist with the development of the Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) to ensure compliance with all current regulations
  • Monitor refrigeration system components, effectively troubleshoot, diagnose, identify, and resolve safety issues and operating inefficiencies
  • Perform evaporative condenser and revers osmosis daily water testing and make adjustments when necessary
  • Effectively record refrigeration system information in the form of daily rounds and perform weekend system checks in the off-season
  • Assist outside refrigeration related contractors with routine maintenance tasks and capital projects


  • Mechanical aptitude - capable of disassembling complex equipment (drives, pumps, etc.), diagnosing and replacing defective parts, and correctly re-assembling the equipment and make ready for operation
  • Experience with properly operating and maintaining single and two stage ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Proficient in TIG and MIG sanitary welding
  • The ideal candidate will have, at a minimum, three to five years of refrigeration related experience with the CIRO certification through Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association (RETA)
  • High School Diploma/GED

Skills and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights and elevated platforms, work in confined spaces
  • Detail oriented, highly motivated, dependable (excellent attendance is required), and flexible to work nights, weekends, and extended hours during the processing season
  • Basic computer skills with good written and verbal communication abilities
  • Able to read and execute written operating and safety procedures
  • Capable of working unsupervised at times or with limited instruction
  • Wear appropriate PPE to include canister masks and fully encapsulated Haz-Mat suits when necessary
  • Able to analyze system data, identify deviations with established parameters, and effectively correct them with little or no assistance
  • Flexible to adapt and respond to changing production and maintenance demands
  • Background in or familiar with physics, chemistry, and algebra a plus
