Urban agriculture: an appraisal

The 11th Louis Bonduelle Conference will next take place on 12 June, in partnership with the UNESCO Chair in “World Food Systems”. Many experts will be present to discuss the theme of “Urban Agriculture”.

Growing vegetables in the city

Agricultural practices are becoming increasingly widespread in our cities, in the form of kitchen gardens, collective gardens or urban farms. In wasteland or on windowsills, growers are adopting a wide range of techniques, reflecting different lifestyles and infrastructure.

What are the origins and objectives of urban farming?

As well as revegetating our cities and making it easier to breathe, these urban crops also contribute to nutritional needs. With a global population of 9 billion in 2050, of which 70% are urban dwellers (FAO), maintaining supplies will be a crucial issue. Urban farming is not only a leisure activity today; it also changes our relationship with food.

How did farming find its way to the city? What impact will it have on the way you eat? A group of experts will try to answer these questions at the 11th Louis Bonduelle Conference, entitled “The City & Agriculture: Reconciliation or Dissociation?”

Among them:

●     Florent Quellier, Historian

●     Joelle Zask, Philosopher

●     Antoine Jacobsohn, Manager of the “Royal Vegetable Garden” (Versailles)

●     Christine Aubry, Agronomist

●     Nicole Darmon, Nutritionist

●     Julie Le Gall, Geographer

Conference on Tuesday 12 June 2018 at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
